Candidature of Bank Indonesia Governor

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed President of Bank Mandiri Agus Martowardojo and Vice President of Asset Management Company Raden Pardede as the candidates to head Bank Indonesia for the period 2008-2013.

The presidential decision is seen to be controversial in some circles. Several parties questioned the capability of both nominees. They are seen by the public to be not having sufficient background in the monetary field.

Apart from the controversy, who will assume the post of Bank Indonesia governorship would be determined by a fit and proper test by parliament. Because of that, we hope DPR will conduct the task well by choosing the most qualified person to take this strategic post.

We hope that the chosen governor of Bank Indonesia will possess the capability to lead the central bank. Apart from that, the chosen governor must ensure it to become independent, not vulnerable to interventionist powers. (Ts)
